The aircraft maintenance planner is a vital role in the aircraft engineering industry. It is often a role that flies under the radar! Not many people are aware this role even exits! But planners are incredibly vital to the operation. Planning involves monitoring a number of aircraft in order to establish when maintenance is due. This maintenance can be due short term, mid term or long term. In aviation, there are often a variety of different planning roles being: Production Planner, Short Term Planner, Mid Term Planner and Base Planners.
It is important to note that different companies will have different titles or job requirements for planners depending on their needs. Below is a brief description of all 4 roles.
The production planner role has different requirements depending on which company you work for. Often the role as a production planner will involve reviewing scheduled work packages provided by short term or mid term planners. This includes checking parts, tooling, manpower, qualified staff to perform the work and making any necessary changes. In this role the planner monitors the plan for each aircraft until it arrives. In other companies, the production planner role can be a combination of mid term, short term, base and production planning.
Short term planners usually focus on planning line maintenance and following AOG's. They plan any maintenance tasks that are due within the next 10 days (this figure may differentiate depending on the company). These tasks can vary from defects to scheduled line maintenance tasks. For example: daily checks, partial gear lubrications and database updates.
Mid term planners usually focus on planning light maintenance most commonly carried out in a hangar. These inputs usually do not last longer than 12hrs. They will forecast a plan of all the hangar visits over a certain time period and ensure all requirements are adhered to. Some examples of planned maintenance are: 'A & P checks' , '12000h checks, engine changes and many more.
Base planners often establish a long term maintenance plan and will be planning heavy aircraft checks. This type of heavy maintenance means that often aircraft components can be sent away for overhaul, the cabin could be stripped out and major modifications could be carried out.
Internships are a great way to get into a planning role! There are a select few companies in aviation that offer planning internships. These usually involve a years contract where you assist and shadow current aircraft maintenance planners. After a year, if you are fully competent, the company has the option to recruit you as a fully qualified planner.
There are limited apprenticeships for planning specifically, but the aviation industry is always looking for ways to bring in more people! easyJet have launched a MOC apprenticeship which allows you to study a Level 3 in Business Administration and work with the planning dept.
The majority of companies require a minimum number of years planning experience, however if you have the right attitude, good problem solving skills and coordination you may be able to surpass this requirement. It is always good to apply anyway, to gain experience for interview experience and a good understanding of the job role.
