Do you have a passion for aviation? Do you like the idea of working with aircraft? Then this career may be for you!
Most companies require 5 x GCSE's A*-C (9-4) with a minimum of a B (6) in maths.
If you have the option to take a Level 2 in engineering or some form of resistant materials, this will help you to get a good feel for the industry and boost your knowledge. It will also aid you with entry to a Level 3 college course in the relevant subject.
Absolutely you can! You can start applying on your chosen company's website and use your predicted grades for your GCSE's.
We always recommend figuring out which route you want to take into the industry. If you are looking for an apprenticeship, check the latest job adverts for their entry requirements. This may help you decide which courses to look at for college. If you are looking at university, we recommend checking their entry requirements as well. This is because these may differ.
If you are looking at the university route then most commonly you will require:
- BTEC Extended Diploma (MMM) in either an Engineering, Science or Maths subject
- A Levels passed with grade CCC and must include a Maths and/or Physics subject.
There are many UK colleges that offer aircraft maintenance qualifications and have secure connections with several airlines and companies that recruit for engineers.
The answer to this question is no. You do not need to go back to school . Depending on your current qualifications, you may be eligible for an apprenticeship with your chosen airline or company. Alternatively if you have a keen interest in aviation and engineering, you can apply for a Trainee Mechanic role.
If you cannot afford to drop down to an apprenticeship, your best option would be to go for a Trainee Mechanic / Junior Mechanic role. There are various companies that recruit for this position. The salary is usually higher than those on an apprenticeship and may be more suitable for you. If you wish to get an aircraft maintenance licence, you can also partake in Self-Study courses with a Part 147 approved training provider.
